Some history…
When I was a safety practitioner, what frustrated me the most was people problems—management who lack commitment, supervisors who lack ownership and workers who are complacent. Yet, I had limited tools at my disposal because most of what I learnt are technical knowledge. As I resorted to the train–nag–enforce approach, I found that it only got me so far—I obtained only temporary compliance from employees, and developed an antagonistic relationship with the production side.
Feeling discontented, I embarked on a learning journey. I ploughed through books and research papers, attended coaching and psychology classes and often reflected on the topic of change. Gradually, it became obvious that a gap existed between the tools I have been using and what science said.
Over the years, I have fine-tuned a set of tools that drive change faster and easier.
